Laboratory

The Laboratory Department is one of the five departments within the Civil Engineering Institute MACEDONIA with main activity being quality control of construction materials, as well as control of the performed construction works in accordance with the accredited European standards.

The laboratory is fully equipped, and it offers more than 267 up-to-date calibrated cameras and a lot of additional resources to perform the tests according to the MKS standard, European standard, and, if necessary, and other applicable global standards (ASTM, DIN, ASHTO, GOST, etc.).

The laboratory is the first accredited laboratory in Macedonia according to ISO 17025 since 2009. 141 methods from all fields in construction have been accredited. In 2013, and 2017, re-accreditation was carried out, in 2018, re-accreditation was carried out according to the renewed standard MKS EN ISO 17025:2018, and in 2021, the Laboratory was re-accredited for the 4th time, thus our Accredited Laboratory has sent the latest amendments and additions in step European standards. • Performs tests of water for concrete preparation
• Prepares study for chemical aggressiveness on structures by natural soils and groundwaters
• Prepares a complete study for the color of horizontal signalization
• Tests concrete prefabricated elements (concrete road curbs, concrete park curbs, concrete pipes, behaton tiles, columns, drainage channels, manholes)
• Non-destructive testing of concrete in structures with sclerometer and ultrasound
• Destructive testing of concrete in structures by extracting concrete cores
• Testing of special concretes (SCC, lightweight concrete, heavy concrete, sprayed concrete, rolled concrete, hydraulic concrete, road concrete and high value concrete)
• Complete testing of Self-compacting concrete SCC ( U-box, L-box, J-ring)
• Complete examination of sprayed concrete (determination of initial strengths with the help of a penetrometer, early strengths with hilti metod, consistency of fresh sprayed concrete) as well as complete determination of the type of sprayed concrete according to its purpose
• The design of the component formulations, by making previous laboratory tests for all types of concrete (ordinary, pumped, SCC, lightweight concrete, heavy concrete, sprayed concrete, rolled concrete, hydraulic concrete, road concrete and high value concrete)
• Concrete mix designs for prefabricated elements
• Complete design of recipes for injection masses with previous laboratory tests of physical-mechanical characteristics, strength characteristics, water separation, volume change, flow, frost resistance.
• Performs complete laboratory and field tests on fresh concrete Consistency (Slump test, UK Test, spread, degree of compaction), determination of the presence of pores in fresh concrete.
• Performs complete laboratory and field tests on hardened concrete such as Compressive strength, tensile strength during bending, tensile strength during bending, tensile strength during shear
• Performs tests on special and rheological properties of concrete such as frost resistance of concrete, frost resistance of concrete and thawing salts, waterproofing of concrete, wear of concrete, modulus of elasticity, slip resistance, shrinkage of concrete.
• Prepares Concrete Design for all types of civil engineering, building construction and hydro-construction facilities.
• Prepares Quality Assurance Program for concrete and reinforced-concrete structures for all types of facilities in the field of civil engineering, building construction and hydro-construction.
• Creates a technology for placement and tending of all types of concretes and concrete structures
• Testing steel and steel structures (reinforcing steel, steel profiles, reinforcement mesh and steel ropes)
• Performs testing of the environmental noise level
• Performs testing of the concentration of suspended particles in the air
• Examines prefabricated beams from clay elements for making mezzanine or ceiling structures and determines load-bearing capacity based on measurement of local and general deformations to breakage
• Tests the bridges by sample loading based on measuring the local, global deformations, dynamic characteristics and other mechanical properties
• Examines structures and elements of high-rise buildings with test load, performs measurement of local and general deformations, dynamic characteristics, fracture strength and other mechanical characteristics.
• Complete testing of all cement types (determining the strength, chemical analysis, setting time, constant volume, soundness)
• Testing of composite plastic materials
• Complete testing of ceramic tiles (dimensional quality and surface quality, water absorption, apparent porosity, apparent relative density, volume mass, bending strength, load-bearing capacity, impact resistance by measuring the bounce coefficient, abrasion of glazed tiles, resistance heat shock, lasagna, freezing, chemicals, stains, lead and cadmium excretion from glazed tiles)
• Complete examination of plasters (determination of bulk density, compressive strength, adhesion, adhesion after treatment at different temperatures, capillary water absorption, water permeability after water absorption, vapor permeability, open working time, water-soluble chloride content, inlet air content , penetration consistency, shaking chair consistency, correction time)

• Performs tests of asphalt, bitumen and insulation materials.
• Performs previous geomechanical investigation works and laboratory tests for the Detailed Designs and the Designs of Infrastructure.
• Performs previous geotechnical laboratory tests for determining the bearing capacity of the soil for the founding of structures.
• Quality assurance and control of materials installed in infrastructure facilities
• Performs field tests of founding, load-bearing walls and building construction and hydroconstruction facilities.
• Performs previous geomechanical tests for determining the physical-mechanical characteristics of the materials and evaluation of their usability during the
construction of civil engineering facilities.
• Conducts soil classification tests: natural moisture, natural bulk density, specific weigh, granulation,
• Conducts tests defining the physical-mechanical properties of the soils: Internal friction angle, cohesion, compressibility modulus, uniaxial
strength of coherent soils and filtration coefficient,
• Chemical analyses of soils, organic matter content, and content of carbonates.
• Prepares previous composition of asphalt mixtures, as well as testing of the physical-mechanical properties of the asphalts placed in the pavement structure,
performs control and current tests.
• Performs monitoring during the installation of asphalt pavements
• Participates in the construction of trial road sections for construction of road base and asphalt layers of pavement structures
• Performs complete tests of the properties of bitumen, bitumen hydro insulations and systems.
• Provides preparation of reports and standardized laboratory documents from the performed quality tests.
• Prepares Designs for dimensioning the pavement structures
• Prepares studies, reports and analyses from the materials’ testing.
• Prepares reports on performed analyses from laboratory data.
• Provides preparation of periodical reports from repeated testing.
• Guarantees complete appliance of the quality standards and the accredited procedures for laboratory and field tests.
• Consults in relation to quality standards for the materials and possibilities for improving the quality.
• Testing and determining the physical-mechanical, chemical and mineralogical petrographic properties of technical stone for structural and architectural
decorative purposes.
• Testing and determining the physical-mechanical, chemical and mineralogical petrographic properties of a fractioned natural river
aggregate of crushed stone for the production of aggregate for concrete, asphalt, mortars and other applications in civil engineering.
• Issuing quality certificates (attest) of separated aggregates and non-separated natural, river mixtures.
• Testing and determining the physical-mechanical, chemical and mineralogical petrographic properties of a coarser crushed aggregate separated to fractions for
preparing ballast surfacing for the railway.
• Testing ceramic construction products (bricks, blocks, tiles etc.), fine decorative ceramics (ceramic tiles), fire resistant materials and raw materials for
the production of ceramics.
• Consulting services for improving the quality of the separated stone materials, as well as for increasing the efficiency and effectiveness in the production of
separated crushed stone aggregates.
• Consulting services for the selection of appropriate drilling equipment when drilling a new dig in dependence of the quality of the raw stone.
• Consulting services when selecting a location for the drilling equipment and separators.
• Consulting services for improving the quality of the ceramic construction products, as well as for increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of their
production.

• Prepares a program for performing previous tests during the preparation of geotechnical reports for the needs of the road infrastructure
• Performs previous geotechnical investigation works for the needs of the road infrastructure
• Mapping and sampling during the geotechnical investigation works for the needs of the road infrastructure
• Performs field tests during the geotechnical investigation works for the needs of the road infrastructure
• Prepares a program for performing ongoing and control field tests during the construction of civil engineering facilities.
• Performs field and laboratory geomechanical tests during the construction of civil engineering facilities
• Performs ongoing tests of raw materials during the preparation of concrete mixtures
• Performs field and laboratory tests of fresh and hardened concrete mixture during the construction of facilities in civil engineering and building construction
• Performs sampling of concrete structures
• Performs ongoing geomechanical tests for determining the physical-mechanical properties of the soil materials and evaluation of their usability during the
construction of civil engineering facilities.
• Consults in relation to the quality standards for the usable construction materials and the possibilities for improving their quality during construction.
• Performs field and laboratory tests and participates during the preparing of a record during the construction of trial road sections in civil engineering.
• Performs monitoring during the installation of asphalt layers during the construction of civil engineering facilities
• Performs ongoing tests during the installation of asphalt mixtures in civil engineering facilities
• Samples of finished pavement samples for further laboratory tests.
• Performs ongoing tests when installing asphalt mixtures on civil engineering structures
• Smoothness measurements during the construction of civil engineering structures
• Guarantees complete implementation of the quality standards and the accredited procedures for field tests
• Prepares reports on the performed ongoing control of field and laboratory tests during the construction of civil engineering facilities
